Vamos a Leer! Los pingüinos adoran los colores

Hola! What I'm about to show you is one of the CUTEST read alouds EVER!!!! I feel in love with this book as soon as I saw the cover. Once I read the story I knew I had to have it. Los pingüinos adoran los colores is perfect for the first week of kindergarten. I love how colorful it is (obviously). It's simple to read, the images are absolutely ADORABLE, and it will allow me to go over a very important lesson in a dual language classroom: COLORS!!!

When I taught dual language kindergarten for the first time, I quickly learned I was very mistaken to assume all my kids knew their colors. For some it was easy to recognize them, but others (specially my non-Spanish speakers) needed some extra help. I decided then and there a lesson on colors the first day/week of kindergarten is a MUST, and it's even more important in a dual language setting. \
You can grab a copy of this book HERE

This year I will use this cute story to review colors, my color posters in Spanish, and the FREEBIE at the end of this post.

The story is basically about 6 penguins who want to surprise their mom and they decide to use paint to create a lil something for her...and of course... they end up making a huge mess (momma penguin doesn't seem to mind though)

I'm sure your students will LOVE this story. Here's a FREEBIE for you to use this with. I've included an English and a Spanish copy :)

3 things I will not do as a pregnant teacher

Pregnancy has gotten way better now that I'm not in the first trimester anymore. First trimester was just terrible!

As I look ahead and think of the back to school season I'm setting 3 goals for myself...focusing more on things I am NOT going to do while I'm a pregnant teacher and I encourage you to do the same if you're also teaching and pregnant...

First Week Fun

We survived the first week...let me rephrase that...I survived the first week! Students seemed to enjoy it very much.

We have been going over our rituals and routines and they seem to be getting better at it, as long as we keep practicing they will become masters in no time. What seemed hard to accomplish on the first day was a piece of cake by Friday!

We started our week by reading The Kissing Hand - Un beso en mi mano. This is one of the sweetest read alouds out there. Students can connect to it right away and it gets them talking about their feelings...great way to start getting to know each other!

Then we went over crayon sharing expectations and did our first coloring activity of the year! I plan on saving these to put in their portfolios at the end of the year. I know parents will love to see how their kids coloring has changed.

You can grab this FREEBIE at the end of the post :)

Letter Oo

Back to school is just around the corner for me which means prep, prep and more prep! It's a lot of work but it's one of my favorite times of the year. Sparkling clean classrooms, brand new borders, fresh laminating aaaah!! But when your room is ready for those little ones to come in you can't forget to be ready with quality work as well, which is exactly what I've been working on this week. I've been preparing all the activities and planning my lessons for the first weeks of school.

During the second (or third) week of school I will be introducing my little ones to the vowels. I know these activities will be fun and engaging and I'm super excited to use them one more time with a new group of kids!

Let me show you what I've prepped for so far...
I like having a mini word wall (separate from the one we use for sight words) to focus on the letter we are learning. I've noticed how much more vocabulary my kids learn. I change it every week and my kids love referring back to it!
I always make sure my students have plenty of opportunities to learn how to trace and write each letter.

Just as important as tracing letters correctly, I give the kids plenty of activities to recognize the beginning sounds. I usually use this coloring activity at the beginning when I first introduce the letter since it's quick and easy.
One of my students favorite activities is the mini books we do every week. I have two different versions and I pick a different one every week depending on how much time (and copies/paper) I have for the week.
And sometimes we do an extra activity on Fridays just for fun! This is when I really push my students to get creative!

You can find these activities HERE.

I hope your planning and prep is going great!!

Birthdays

Confession time: Im the terrible when it comes to remembering my students' birthdays. Every year I have the good intention of doing something special for my kids but I always forget or realize there is no time... sound familiar? This year I promised I would not let that happen, especially since I know that many of my kids are not celebrated at home.

I created birthday bags for each of my kids. I knew I would have to come up with something budget friendly since I have 20+ kids and it can get expensive!! I went to the dollar store and found this:

I thought they were perfect! 10 bags for a dollar??? I'll take them!

Then I went on to the fun (but hardest) part... finding treats. Of course, my heart wanted to get different things but my wallet wasn't so sure...
Luckily I found some HAPPY BIRTHDAY pencils at Target for $1.

These I think were the "most expensive" items I bought. They were a dollar yes, but it only had 6/pack. I brought them anyway! My kids love them!

Some erasers from Dollar Tree 12 for $1 is a great deal!

Then I went to the party section and found these awesome sticker boxes!!

Every bag also included Smarties

I created some homework passes to include in there as well. I wish I could have printed them in colored paper. I was in the middle of packing to move into our new house (yay!!) and my paper was packed away! They still turned out super cute!
You can grab them for FREE here. I've also included a Spanish version :)

What do you do to celebrate your students' birthdays???

BTS Blog Hop!

Hello everyone!! I'm so glad you're joining me once again for another of our cool blog hops! This hop is going to be packed with ideas and tips for you to be ready and excited about Back to School so make sure you go through all the hop so you don't miss a thing!

On Friday, I made another trip to my classroom to continue setting up. My students don't go back for another 2 weeks but I always try to be a lil ahead of the game and try to set up before that... I'm not the only one right? I finished setting up my Financial Literacy posters and my Scientific Method/Metodo Científico Posters.

Many of you already know I teach in a Dual Language Program. So the visuals in my classroom are both in English and Spanish.

On Friday I had a big DUUUHHH moment but fortunately it turned into a tip that I want to share with you!! Hopefully I'm not the only one with this problem. See every time I go to my classroom I end up thinking of a million things I need to go purchase. Sometimes I write it down on whatever piece of paper I can find BUT since my class is such a big mess right now I end up losing it. I came home and decided to create a very simple, quick way to keep my shopping list in one place... by the door!

There's no way I'll lose it or forget it if its there! I used some colorful washi tape (just to make it more colorful and exciting haha). And now every time I'm out the door I simply grab it and I'm ready to go. Just last time I was there I knew I had to buy command hooks, spray paint, black fabric and pink borders for my bulletin board!

Make sure you head to my store and grab it for FREE

Our Teaching Tribe August Challenge

Hello Friends! I'm very excited to be joining a group of very amazing authors for this Blog Hop! The challenge this month was to trade a product with a blogger and share about the greatness of the product...
Are you ready to see the product I got???

The Self Portrait and Bio Poem by Longwing-Montessori.
Before I tell you a lil about this awesome product... let me tell you about this super TPT author! She has a variety of products in her store that you will absolutely love! Im telling ya... you must check them out during this BTS season... (she has a bunch of FREEBIES too!!).

So... the Self Portrait and Bio Poem is an excellent way to get to know your students. Im going to be using this activity with my third graders during the first week of school. This product includes a 1 page anchor that explains what a Bio Poem is (I will have them glue that into their notebook). It also has a sheet where your students can plan and brainstorm ideas before writing, templates for the cutouts, a rubric, and paper for students to publish their writing piece!

I especially love that she included that planning sheet. It is so hard for some kiddos so come up with ideas and this template allows them to follow a specific format to talk about themselves!

But wait... that's not all!! I really appreciate the way she created the cut outs... You know those craftivities we all have used in the classroom that require you to use a million small pieces, so many copies, kids lose them, and they take away your instructional time? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE those activities because it keeps students engaged but sometimes the kids seem a lil too crazy for them. I love how the cut-out templates in this product are not super small and they are simple to put together. I'm pretty sure my third graders won't take long on putting them together.

So there you have it friends! Isn't it awesome to be able to read a full description of a product before purchasing it?!
You can learn more about this incredible author on her blog and TPT store. Head over to Longwing Montessori and check it out!!

But don't forget to continue hopping through the blogs with us... next you will find Lil Country Librarian...go check her out!! Just click on the image below!

How Do You Rule?

I remember after I signed my first contract I went straight to a teacher store and bought some decorations for my new classroom. I was SO excited! One of those purchases was a packet of Classroom Rules Posters. They were colorful, cute and cheap. Just what I needed right?? Oh I was so WRONG! I posted them on a wall that seemed pretty useless to me...it was kind of like wasted space so it was PERFECT for those rules. I introduced them to my students the first day of school and that was it...we never talked about those posters again...

Throughout the years I have learned several things about Classroom Rules.

     LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
I still remember the place where I posted my classroom rules my first year teaching and I can't help but chuckle... what was I thinking?!?!
You should make sure that your classroom expectations are posted in a place where they are visible during the ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR. I'm talking about a spot that will make it easy for you to refer back to whenever you need to.
Personally, I like posting my rules posters by the door. Our door is also next to the main wall where students are facing. My students always know where to look when we review and discuss our rules.

Make your Classroom Rules POSITIVE
When we come up with our discipline plan it is very common to see the word DON'T in each rule. Don't talk. Don't run. Don't be a bully. Don't stand up.
But in reality we should be doing the exact opposite. Make your classroom expectations/rules look positive. Communicate to your students what they ARE allowed to do instead of what they're not... trust me, you will notice the difference! This year I will use my Classroom Rules in English and Spanish
I particularly love these because it uses words like "our classroom" and it tells students about what WE do instead of what we don't do.

Talk about them the first day week of school
Ok So you've heard many teachers say it... the first weeks of school are the MOST important ones...and they're right. This is when we teach our routines and expectations. It is JUST AS IMPORTANT to teach your students about what to do when they are done as it is to teach them about raising their hand to speak. During the first week of school I have to remind myself to be a lil firmER when reviewing our rules. I make sure that all my students know whats expected from them.

Make it fun and break it down
My first year as a teacher (I know I keep referring to this but I have learned soo much since then!) I remember I made a list of all my routines and all my expectations. The kids came in, sat down, I introduce myself and began talking and talking and talking about rules and routines. I still remember the look my kiddos gave me. It was just too much! Fast forward a few years... on the first day of school I explain the expectations and we do a small activity to go with it. You know... allow your students to get up, move and practice it. Have volunteers show you the right and wrong way to do something. Believe me, it will be more engaging for everybody and your students WILL remember!

Keep reminding
Last but not least DO NOT forget about your rules after the first week of school. I like to remind my students at least once a day. We usually talk about our expectations when we are lining up for lunch or to go home. ALWAYS refer back to your classroom rules visuals.REMEMBER: if you forget, they WILL forget.

Now tell us... how do you implement your classroom rules?

Behavior Clip Chart

The end of the year is coming close for me and if you are like me, you are already thinking about the things you're going to change, add, remove or update next year in your classroom.
I started looking around my classroom (before I started packing) and realized that my Behavior Clip Chart is falling apart! I've had it for 3 years (at least). I wish I had pictures to share with you so you would understand how old it is! It seriously needs to retire SOON!

So I decided to put something together to have it ready for next year and of course I had to share with you :)

My district is going into the dual language program. I'm still unsure if I will be teaching in English or Spanish next year so I made the clip chart in both languages... why not?!

Fire Drill Ready

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Yesterday was one of my favorite NOT SO favorite moments at school... we had a FIRE DRLL! We practice at least once a month so you would think that by now the kiddos and I are pretty much used to it, right? Unfortunately, no. My little ones have improved so much this year and are now able to get out of the building faster! I still remember our first fire drill I had 2 students cry and another one who wouldn't stop screaming! We've come a long way...

That's why I've decided to share a few tips to make these times of the month a little easier for you and your kids and to make sure we are keeping everybody safe!

TEACH the expectations

At the beginning of the year (at least) take the time to teach your kids WHAT they are expected to do during a fire drill and HOW they are expected to behave. Let's face it.. students will not do it if we don't show them. Schools might have different ways to do it, but the first week of school I always show my students our emergency exit and we practice it several times until everyone is comfortable and knows how to get out of the building.

ANSWER their questions and what ifs
- Where will they go?
- What will they do if they are in the restroom/office/another classroom?
- What if I can't find you?
- Who will be the line leader?
- What if the line leader isn't here?
- Who will close the door?

Fire Drill Bag
At the beginning of the year, I make sure this fire drill bag is full and ready to go!

I include some essentials and things I would need in case of an emergency. You never know when you will actually NEED these items and I love to be prepared.

Some of the items I include are:
- Water
- Tissues
- First aid kit (I lost mine! so I had to improvise until I remember to get a new one)
- One piece of candy for each student
- Extra cell phone charger
- Hand sanitizer
- some change $$$ (umbrella is included in the picture because I took it to our field trip lol)

I use a small hook to hang this bag by the door and I quickly grab it on my way out.

Include EMERGENCY contact numbers sheet in your bag!

When I was a first year teacher my school had what appeared to be a fire drill just for practice. However, there was some kind of problem in the building and we had to stay on the street for almost an hour (can you imagine how chaotic it was?) ... I started freaking out because I did not have the UPDATED contact information for any of my children...I had some numbers saved on my cell phone (which was also about to die). Ever since that day, I make sure my fire drill bag always has an extra cell phone charger AND a hard copy with my students' emergency contact information.
